How to manage the NFL’s top 100 players
In the last week, the NFL has been rocked by the departure of two of its top 100 player prospects: Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Tennessee wide receiver DeSean Jackson.
It was an ugly end to a promising season for both players.
Watson, who was a first-round pick in 2014, signed a five-year deal worth $114 million with the Bills, but Jackson is in the middle of his fifth season with the Tennessee Titans.
He had seven catches for 139 yards and a touchdown last season.
Watson was expected to earn more money after making $9.5 million last season and Jackson, who made $12 million in 2016, was coming off a down season with only two catches for 21 yards.
Watson led Clemson to the ACC championship game, but it was Jackson who took the field as the starter.
Jackson caught seven passes for 109 yards and had a career-high five touchdowns in his final college game against Georgia Tech in November.
He also had one interception and one fumble recovery.
Jackson signed a three-year, $22.25 million contract with the Redskins last year and the two sides agreed to a three year, $32.5m contract with each team, according to ESPN.
The Redskins, who had a $12.5M base salary, received $12M for Watson and $12,750 for Jackson in the deal.
The deal includes $8.5 M in incentives.
Jackson is expected to make more money with the Jets and the Raiders in 2017, while Watson has been on the Raiders’ practice squad since 2015.
The Jets are expected to use their seventh-round draft pick on Watson this year, and he will likely compete for playing time with the rest of the top 10 wide receivers.
