Why is Australia’s medical management courses so popular?
The Australian Medical Association’s medical administration courses are proving popular among international medical students.
According to a new survey conducted by the Australian Medical Council’s survey team, the majority of international students in Australia are interested in medical management.
The survey, which polled 1,200 medical students from 20 countries and territories, revealed that 73 per cent of the respondents said they were interested in the medical management course.
The study also revealed that students from China and the US are the most likely to take the courses, with 78 per cent and 70 per cent respectively reporting they are interested.
The courses were also most popular in New Zealand, with 68 per cent taking them.
“As more and more international students are coming to Australia to study, the medical administration course is seeing an increase in interest from both international students and the Australian community,” AMA Chairperson Paul Sayers said.
“We know that the Australian medical community is extremely interested in learning the skills they need to effectively manage patients and their healthcare needs.”
Sayers said the AMA is encouraging international students to consider taking the courses as they see an opportunity to build a strong, professional relationship with the medical profession.
“We want to ensure that our medical students are able to achieve the same success as their Australian counterparts,” he said.
The AMA also recommends students consider the following things when considering whether they should take the course:The AMA survey also revealed one of the most common concerns that students have is whether the course will help them “get the most out of their training”.
“Many international students worry that the course could be more of a hindrance to their education, rather than a benefit,” the survey said.
“Many people do not feel that the AMA courses are relevant to their goals or that the knowledge they gain through the courses is valuable to them,” Sayers added.
The courses are currently being offered across the country.
They are being offered at five international medical schools: the University of Western Australia, the University for the Creative Arts in Perth, the Sydney University School of Medicine, the School of Community Medicine in Melbourne and the University in Brisbane.
